Handcrafted bookmark commemorates publication of our first Mesembs volume
As a special gift for the faithful customers who pre-ordered Steven Hammer's new book on the collectable mesembs, we designed and printed a custom, limited edition bookmark, which shipped with each subscription copy of The Titanopsis Group.
Hand printed in four colors on French brand card stock (color: Hot Fudge), the design is by LSP publisher Russell Wagner. The front image, Titanopsis hugo-schlechteri, is printed in three colors, each layer hand drawn, scanned, manipulated in Photoshop, printed to 11x 17" transparency, and burned to a photopolymer screen in the workshop of Kevin Harris in Berkeley, California. Russell was then joined by his friend (and talened painter) Terry Furry for an all-day print-fest. Each of the three screens were printed in succession to produce 160 plates that would each be cut down to produce four unique bookmarks.
Color changes mid-way through the printing of each screen produced 20 different color combination in the final product. The bookmark reverse is produced by a single screen, with Russell posing the challenge to present three text colors in just one ink.
Russell's drawing yields two different bookmarks that, when placed side by side, produce a single image of an entire plant.
After fixing the pigments and trimming the bookmarks to size, about 20% of misprints and mis-registrations were culled. Most of the remaining were shipped with our Titanopsis Group pre-orderes in late February 2013, and a limited overrun was offered for sale through our website.
